The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) is a certification agency in the US that certifies prehospital and emergency medical providers. This includes professionals who work in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), including:

      • Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs)
      • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
      • Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs)
      • Paramedics

In order to become a certified technician, you must pass the NREMT exam. More than forty-six states in the US have adopted the NREMT exam for one or more of their certification exams.

Exact questions will vary depending on the certification you’re trying to earn–for example, questions for someone earning their EMT certification will vary from questions on the paramedic NREMT exam. Additionally, some of the tests are computer-adaptive, meaning the questions will vary in difficulty depending on your previous answers.

The AEMT NREMT exam, however, is linear, meaning you must answer all 135 questions before receiving your results, while the other exams usually range between eighty to 110 questions, depending on your knowledge, skills, and certification you want to earn.

This exam is computer-based and covers these content areas:

      • Airway, respiration, ventilation
      • Cardiology and resuscitation
      • Trauma
      • Medical/obstetrics/gynecology
      • EMS operations

The exam will focus 85% on adult and geriatric patient care and the remaining 15% will focus on pediatric patient care content.

In most states, if you want to become certified in prehospital and emergency medical care, you will need to pass the corresponding NREMT exam for the certification you want to earn. If you want to become an EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic, chances are, you’ll need to take an NREMT exam.
