If you’ve submitted your application to renew your National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification and have been rejected, there are numerous potential reasons–most often, because your application was considered incomplete or didn’t evidence how you’ve met the requirements.
Don’t panic! There are countless possible factors that mean you’ve missed some of the requirements for NREMT recertification, and being calm and methodical is undoubtedly the best way forward.
The first step is to check why your application was refused and take action, either by sending missing documentation, completing additional professional development learning covering topics you’ve missed, or registering for the CAPCE-accredited recertification program with The Paramedic Coach.
Frequent Reasons for NREMT Recertification Applications to Be Rejected
Pressing the ‘submit’ button on your recertification application can feel unnecessarily tense, as so many amazing emergency medical professionals are worried about the consequences of missing the NREMT recertification deadline. The best way to avoid this is to ensure you understand all the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) recertification requirements and have absolute confidence you have complied in full.
For example, if you know the total hours of study required for your certification level, how that is split into national, local, and individual content, and the exact topics you need to study to meet the requirements, you’ll have no reason at all for concern.
Why Your NREMT Recertification Could Be Turned Down
As we’ve noted, there are many possible reasons, and you’ll usually find one of the below notes on your rejection communications. We’ll explain what these mean, which should shed light on the reasons behind the denial:
- Out of Date: Some of your studies are outside your recertification dates.
- Not Applicable to Topic: Learning doesn’t relate to the topic or content area required.
- Not EMS-Related: Education isn’t clearly linked to EMS patient care.
- Not State/CAPCE Approved: Some or all of your studies haven’t been completed through a recognized provider.
- Duplicate Hours: You appear to have included the same course or study twice.
- Instructor Course: A course is a form of learning for instructors or teachers and does not count toward your continuing education requirements.
- Insufficient Description: You haven’t given enough information about how the study applies to EMS patient care.
- Leadership/Management: Some studies are around leadership or management courses, which don’t count toward recertification.
- Course not Accepted: The program or course isn’t relevant to patient care or EMS.
- Document Required: The NREMT needs supporting documentation or evidence.
How long does it take for the NREMT to approve recertification applications? Most candidates hear back within twenty-four to forty-eight hours, but delays are normal and don’t necessarily mean there’s a problem or you’re about to have your application rejected!
