Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) need to renew their license every two years to continue practicing in the emergency medical services (EMS) field. As part of EMT certification requirements in Georgia, recertifying EMTs need to complete continuing education units (CEUs) from a state- or CAPCE-approved course. There are several to choose from; it’s best to contact the Regional EMS Program Director in your county to find which EMT classes are offered near you.
The Paramedic Coach offers a CAPCE-accredited recertification program that can effectively refresh your knowledge and provide you with new insights into EMS while providing you with your CEUs to renew your license.
Things to Consider When Getting EMT Continuing Education in Georgia
Finding the right EMT CE program is your key to renewing your EMS license in Georgia. Here are some things to consider before choosing which course to enroll in:
Recertification Requirements
Make sure that your program is approved by the Georgia Office of EMS and Trauma (OEMS) or CAPCE to be eligible for recertification. The course content should also align with the Georgia state requirements for continuing education, which stipulate forty CE hours consisting of:
- Eight hours of pediatric topics
- Four hours of cardiovascular topics
- Four hours of trauma topics
- Twenty-four hours of general EMS topics
Academic Framework
What skills do Georgia EMTs need? A good EMT CE program answers that question and more. Understand the program’s framework and if it follows the national and state standards for educating EMS professionals.
Mode of Learning
CE requirements in Georgia can be done either in person or online. Choosing one or the other will depend on your learning style and preference.
If you absorb information better with a guided instructor and lesson plan, a classroom setup will be best for you; if you need more flexibility or prefer to learn at your own speed, opt for online classes. Regardless of your mode of learning, it’s good to complement your CE with supplementary materials like those in our Video Vault.
What Happens After EMT CE in Georgia?
Once you finish all your CEUs, you must save them in the Georgia Department of Public Health’s (DPH) EMS License Management System (LMS). This platform allows you to track and document your CE, both for the purpose of recertification and in the event of an audit.
If you’re taking a state-accredited program, your instructor will add you to the course roster, and your CE hours may be automatically added into your LMS. Still, it’s good to double-check your account to make sure everything’s accounted for.
For EMTs taking a program outside of Georgia (make sure it’s CAPCE-approved), you’ll have to input your credits manually on LMS by entering the necessary information and uploading a scanned copy of your course certificate. After recording your continuing education hours, you can now apply to renew your EMT license. It’s a simple process that you can do online through LMS.
Here’s how online EMT recertification works in Georgia:
- Log in to your LMS account and toggle to the Georgia Medic Renewal application.
- Complete the requirements.
- Pay the fee ($75, with an extra $75 penalty fee for late renewals).
- Submit the application.
Successful renewals will display a ‘Completed’ status and will receive an email confirming recertification.
