What Type of Paramedic Makes the Most Money?

Embarking on a paramedic career path is an admirable and rewarding journey, offering opportunities to save lives and make a tangible difference in emergencies. Many people wonder, ‘Can I become a paramedic without a degree?’ The answer is ‘yes,’ but the path requires dedication and preparation.

Whether you’re just starting out or considering how to advance your career, understanding the challenges ahead is crucial. From mastering life-saving techniques to enduring physically and emotionally demanding situations, learning what the hardest part of being a paramedic is can help you prepare for the realities of this vital role.

The road to becoming a paramedic starts with proper preparation. Before you can excel in paramedic school or take on advanced responsibilities, you must build a strong foundation in emergency medical care.

This preparation not only sets you up for success in your training but also helps you thrive in high-pressure environments. For those who aspire to climb the ladder in EMS, understanding the various paramedic career paths–such as flight paramedics, paramedic supervisors, or paramedic nurses–can inspire and guide your journey toward a fulfilling and lucrative future.

How Much Does a Paramedic Make?

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), paramedics earn an average of $25.75 an hour or $53,560 annually in 2022. Most paramedics are employed in ambulatory health services, local government offices, and general hospitals.

How much a paramedic makes is based on several factors, but it’s typically anchored in the individual’s experience. Paramedics with more field experience will earn more than newer recruits, and those who work in more specialized environments, like paramedics deployed on flights or cruises, usually earn higher wages than those involved in on-ground health services.

Highest-Paying Paramedic Jobs

Paramedics can earn up to over $100,000 a year. Paramedic supervisors, flight paramedics, and paramedic nurses are the types of paramedics that make the most money.

Paramedic Supervisor

A paramedic supervisor, also called a ‘paramedic manager,’ performs all the usual responsibilities of a paramedic, including evaluating patients on scene and in transport, providing basic and advanced EMS care. However, their job description also includes planning and implementing clinical programs and patient care, as well as training other emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics, and evaluating staff performance.

They oversee their teams and are also in charge of inspecting and maintaining medical equipment. The salary of a paramedic supervisor may range between $57,500 to over $120,000 a year.

Flight Paramedic

A flight paramedic is a paramedic who performs their duties on patients who must be airlifted between medical facilities. This type of EMS professional often requires extensive experience as a ground EMT, additional certificates in related medical subjects, and air service training.

They work with a flight nurse and pilot on fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, or planes. Flight paramedics typically earn between $55,000 to $90,000 annually.

Paramedic Nurses

A paramedic nurse is a cross between an EMS professional and a nurse. They fulfill all the requirements of being a paramedic but usually supplement their skills and know-how with a few years of nursing credits.

This makes them adept in clinical topics, including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, and mental health nursing. Paramedic nurses are paid an average of $86,000 per year.

Becoming a Paramedic

Even the most advanced paramedics follow the same path: taking up an emergency medical technician (EMT) course, passing the National Registry of EMTs exam, and completing the same cycle again for the paramedic level. While it seems simple, the education and testing involved in becoming a paramedic can get difficult, which is why it’s important to build a good foundation of EMT knowledge before starting this journey.
