What Topics to Focus on for the Arizona EMT Test

Emergency vehicle, white ambulance

The Arizona emergency medical technician (EMT) test covers the job tasks and the associated knowledge and skills that form the basis of emergency medical services (EMS).

This might sound broad, but the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) categorizes these into five content domains: scene size-up and safety, primary assessment, secondary assessment, patient treatment and transport, and operations. These are what you need to focus on during Arizona EMT certification prep to successfully pass the test and earn your license.

Content for the EMT Certification Examination

Before Spring 2025, the NREMT outlined the exam content as follows:

  • Airway, Respiration, and Ventilation
  • Cardiology and Resuscitation
  • Trauma
  • Medical; Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • EMS Operations.

Recently, however, the content domains were updated and now emphasize the most critical task of an EMT: patient assessment.

Despite the name change, it’s important to acknowledge that the actual content of the exam generally remains the same. You’ll still encounter questions surrounding the previous five topics, so a valuable tip for passing the Arizona EMT certification is to still include these concepts in your study plan.

Let’s break down the updated content domains for the EMT certification exam.

Scene Size-up and Safety

EMTs should be able to develop a plan of action before arriving at an emergency to ensure that they operate safely and effectively. This content domain checks your ability to investigate a scene to determine hazards, triage patients, and request appropriate resources for assistance.

Primary Assessment

The primary assessment content domain gauges how you communicate with patients and bystanders. It tests if you’re able to determine complaints and threats, obtain results from vital signs and diagnostic testing, and identify the need for immediate treatment or transport.

It does this by evaluating your knowledge of assessing patients’ level of consciousness, airway, breathing status, and circulation. Primary assessment makes up the largest bulk of the exam at 39% to 43%.

Secondary Assessment

In the secondary assessment section, the NREMT exam touches on a deeper level of investigating patients’ circumstances. This includes physical assessment, interviewing, and understanding medical history and previous findings to develop a continued treatment plan.

Patient Treatment and Transport

Patient treatment and transport tests your comprehension of medical interventions, such as airway and ventilation management, cardiovascular treatment, trauma management, etc. It also covers medications and demographic-based interventions, as well as patient transport and communicating information to hospitals and other healthcare professionals for continued care.

Operations

The operations content domain ensures that you know how to use equipment, manage inventory, facilitate proper documentation, and safeguard the wellbeing of your patients, other responders, and yourself.

Tips for Studying the Arizona EMT Test Content

Knowing what to study for the NREMT test is the first step to passing. Here are some additional Arizona EMT study tips for exam success that can help you understand these topics efficiently:

Break Down the Concepts

Don’t just memorize concepts–understand them. Break down the concepts into four key parts: a basic description, risks, hallmark signs and symptoms, and treatment.

When you comprehend these pieces, you can map out scenarios more easily. A great way to know if you have a full understanding of a topic is if you’re able to explain it to someone else simply and plainly. It also helps to do practice tests and quizzes to properly assess your understanding.

Follow a Study Plan

Find a solid study program and stick to it. Focus on a single comprehensive resource that can progress you into full mastery. Once you finish the plan, do it again so that everything sticks.
