Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) test prep can be daunting and overwhelming‒you need to learn complicated medical terminology, juggle treatment strategies, and know how to use different medical equipment. You’re probably understanding just how hard the New York State EMT test really is!

But do you need a perfect score to pass the State EMT exam? You only need a score of 70% or higher to pass the New York State EMT exam. While this percentage seems doable, it’s important to know that nearly 25% of test takers fail the first time they take the exam. If you take the time to study and invest in the right study resources, you can increase your chances of passing the exam.

How Do You Receive Results?

Unlike the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) knowledge test, the New York State skills test doesn’t immediately give you your results. Typically, your results will be mailed to you within four to six weeks from your exam date.

To make sure you receive your results on time, double-check that you’ve filled in the correct mailing address on your student application. Remember that you cannot receive your results over the phone, so calling the State EMS Office won’t get you your results more quickly.

Understanding Your Raw Score Versus Your Percent Score

No matter which level of EMT exam you take, you must score at least 70% or higher to pass. The standard EMT exam means earning a minimum of seventy points.

If you are taking the EMT-Intermediate exam, you must score a minimum of 70% on the Basic Portion and Advanced Portion each, which boils down to fifty-three points on the Basic Portion and thirty-nine points on the Advanced Portion. EMT-Critical Care examinees must earn fifty-three points on the Basic Portion and eighty-eight on the Advanced Portion.

How Long Is the Exam?

The standard EMT skills test in New York State allows for a total testing time of two and a half hours. If you are taking the EMT-Intermediate exam, that time increases to three hours, then four hours for EMT-Critical Care.

Retaking the Test

If your test is just around the corner or you’ve failed once, don’t worry‒you can retake the test. Examinees who have failed the New York State EMT exam will receive a notice of failure for the entire exam, even if they passed a portion of the exam. You can retake the exam within one year to earn certification.

What if you fail the exam on your second attempt? New York State requires examinees who have failed twice to successfully complete a refresher or a second original course prior to being admitted for the third exam.

But, what happens if you fail the New York State EMT exam three times? Candidates who fail three or more times must complete another refresher course prior to being readmitted for the exam.
