Tackling NREMT Terminology Confusion

Learning medical terminology and concepts can be complicated and can make it difficult to overcome fear of NREMT testing. If you are confused on concepts or terms in your NREMT online test prep, you can start using flashcards, ask an expert, work with another student as you study, or take a different approach to your studies.

In this post, we’ll explain exactly how you can turn confusion into confidence before your NREMT exam date!

How to Address Confusion When Studying

First of all, confusion is a normal part of learning anything. Learning about emergency medical services is no simple feat, and you’re dedicating yourself to a career that saves lives, so start by giving yourself a pat on the back. After all, holding onto anxiety and self-doubt can make it more difficult to learn and retain new information.

Take the stigma out of studying. Don’t be hard on yourself for struggling during the learning process. Once you maintain your confidence, you can try these tactics to help you overcome any confusion:

Use Flashcards

Flashcards are a common study tool used for all kinds of subjects. They are two-sided cards, with a prompt or question on one side and an answer or more details on the other. You’ll work through these cards like a deck by looking at the prompt or question, answering the question or recalling the information, and flipping it over to check if your response was correct.

This tool can benefit you because it uses active recall and spaced repetition. This means you repeat the information–but not all at once–so you can make sure you truly understand the concept.

Work With a Study Buddy

When you are studying new concepts, it can help with work with another student from your class or a student you met through The Paramedic Coach. This peer is familiar with the same material as you, and they might know a way to help you understand it better; or, if they’re also confused, you can work together to pick apart the term and understand it!

Ask an Expert

If you’re ever in doubt about a term in the EMS field, you can ask your prep class instructor. You pay them to help you understand the material, so don’t feel embarrassed asking for further clarification or for them to slow down when explaining terminology in class.

Take a Different Approach

Have you ever read a full page in a book only to scratch your head and not recall a single thing you read? We’ve all been there. Textbooks can be packed with valuable information, but sometimes, we need to receive information in a different way for it to stick in our brains or make sense.

Try reading the definition of the term out loud, or record yourself reading examples of the concept at hand. Often, listening back to definitions can help, as some people learn better by listening and speaking rather than reading. Don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works for you!
