While balancing work and paramedic recertification requirements has traditionally been difficult, it is always worth keeping your National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification current.
Lapsed certifications have varied ramifications depending on the rules within your state but can hinder your ability to accept new emergency medicine roles, particularly those in other regions. Depending on how long you’ve allowed your certification to remain outdated, you may even need to retake examinations.
We’ve released our brand-new online paramedic recertification course in light of the complexity of keeping up with recertification rules. This engaging, simplified, and fully CAPCE-accredited program makes recertification straightforward and easy to fit in around your working hours.
What Are the National Registry Recertification Rules for EMS Professionals?
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) expects every certified professional, at every level, from EMR to paramedic, to complete recertification every two years as a continued professional development requirement. While some states do not have a recertification rule and localized licensure will remain valid, failure to recertify can have serious repercussions, especially if you hope to advance your career or look at alternative roles as a nationally certified paramedic.
In short, you’ll need to prove you have completed a minimum number of hours of education and that those hours cover the content areas set out in the National Continued Competency Program (NCCP). Those are:
- Sixteen hours for EMRs, forty hours for EMTs, fifty hours for AEMTs, and sixty hours for paramedics
- Split into 50% national content–the same topics covered on the original NREMT examination–with the remainder shared between local and individual content components
This means your educational course or program cannot be random and must prove that you’ve met the requirements and have invested the necessary time to get up to speed with what is happening in the world of emergency medicine.
What Happens if I Don’t Achieve NREMT Recertification in Time?
Continued professional education is considered mandatory because, without recertification, you might miss out on key knowledge you can apply to your patient care or skip over updates and policy changes relevant on a national and localized level. The immediate issues of overlooking recertification aren’t always obvious for some emergency medicine professionals because your state might continue to validate your licensure regardless of whether your national certifications are current.
However, if you choose to skip recertification or miss the deadline, you’ll need to jump through hoops to regain nationally certified status, recertify to accept any job outside of your current status, or even possibly retake the certification exam–something you’ll very likely wish to avoid!
What Is the Best Way to Achieve My NREMT Recertification Credits?
We recognize that there is varied terminology. If you’re used to recertification being referred to as Continued Education or CE credits, rest assured that every course within The Paramedic Coach’s recertification program counts towards your CE.
Rather than the typical route of classroom-based learning, which can be almost impossible to juggle alongside your role, or dry, hard-to-digest lectures and courses, we’ve created an engaging, easy-to-navigate, and structured course that walks you through each topic with clarity.
