Popular NREMT Memory Improvement Techniques

Pencil and notebook popular nremt memory improvement techniques

The NREMT exam covers many topics and kinds of content, which can make studying for the test overwhelming. How do you even pack all of that knowledge into your brain? You can use the ‘1234’ method, repetition, and alpha brain wave techniques to improve your memory for the NREMT.

With the right game plan, effective studying techniques, and a comprehensive NREMT exam prep program, you can easily pass your NREMT test! These strategies will help with any difficulty staying on track for the NREMT that you may experience. In this post, we’ll explore three key ways to improve your memory when studying for the exam.

Use Alpha Brain Waves

Alpha brain waves are a pattern of electrical activity produced by the brain when it’s idle. It measures between eight and twelve hertz and occurs when you feel relaxed, such as when you’re meditating. Hearing this sound can help calm down your brain, allowing you to focus on the task at hand.

You can look up ‘alpha brain waves’ online for videos that you can play in the background while you’re studying. This contributes to a learning-conducive environment and may help you remember your study content better.

Follow the ‘1234’ Method

The ‘1234’ method is a studying technique that helps you zero in on the important details of the content you’re reviewing or studying. This method encourages you to cut down on the fluff and hone your attention on the information that you actually need to remember by breaking it down into four key points.

For example, when you’re studying diseases and emergencies for the NREMT exam, you can use the ‘1234’ method in the following way:

  1. A simple explanation of what the disease or emergency is
  2. The risk factors associated with the disease or emergency
  3. Hallmark signs and symptoms of the disease or emergency
  4. How to treat the disease or emergency

The key with this method is to determine what the four most important factors are that you need to study or review when preparing for a certain NREMT topic.

Explore Mnemonics

Mnemonics are strategies for effective memorization. Here are some common mnemonic devices that you can use to improve your memory while you study for the NREMT:

Keywords

You can apply keyword mnemonics when you want to remember certain words or concepts. For this strategy to work, you need to think of a word that sounds similar to the new word you’re trying to learn (the ‘keyword’) and create a vivid mental image connecting the keyword to the meaning of the new word. The visualization and association should help trigger your recall when you take the exam.

Chunking

Chunking is a mnemonic technique that involves grouping information into blocks, phrases, or numbers. This is especially helpful when you’re trying to remember numbers. For example, the string 987264525534 might be hard to keep in mind, but it’s easier to recall when you break it down as 9872-6452-5534.

Acronyms and Acrostics

Acronyms and acrostics are some of the most familiar types of mnemonic techniques. It’s about creating a formula to remember long-form information, and it’s widely used in the EMS community. For instance, you can use the acronym SAMPLE to gather a patient’s medical history:

  • S: Signs and Symptoms
  • A: Allergies
  • M: Medications
  • P: Past medical history
  • L: Last oral intake
  • E: Events leading up to the present illness/injury

Create Flashcards

Flashcards are note cards that contain short-form information that’s easier to recall. They can enhance your retention skills by leveraging active recall, metacognition, and spaced repetition. They take a bit of time to prepare, but even that stage of writing your study content down helps with retaining details.

When working with flashcards, you should review them consistently and read your answers aloud. You can also test yourself once in a while by mixing up your cards.

Practice Repetition

Memorization happens with constant repetition. Learn things over and over again until you can recite what you’re studying from memory. This practice is even more effective when you use one source. This way, your method is consistent!
