Online Versus In-Person EMT Classes in Washington

In Washington State, there is no limit to the amount of online education that can be applied to the Washington State EMT certification process. This allows students to complete their training in a traditional in-person environment, completely online, in a hybrid format combining the two formats or with an accelerated program.

Exploring the various options for how to become an EMT in Washington State and complying with EMT continuing education in Washington will help you make the right choice when deciding what learning format is best for you.

A Closer Look at In-Person Learning

In-person learning emphasizes hands-on training and practical skills. It offers opportunities for students to interact and build relationships with the instructor and fellow students. An instructor can also incorporate real-world advice and anecdotes into the lessons based on their experiences in the field to further enrich classroom sessions.

On the downside, students need to carve enough time out of their busy schedules to travel to a facility to attend EMT classes. Many schools have different options to accommodate different schedules, including meeting only one full day per week or breaking up the training into several days per week with fewer hours for each session. The choice of evening or daytime classes is also common.

A Closer Look at Online Learning

Online courses, on the other hand, offer greater flexibility, allowing students to continue working while completing EMT training at their own pace. Online programs can be self-directed, interactive, and include virtual instructor-led sessions.

Even with an online education program, students will be required to complete labs and skill training in person. This may include ride-alongs with an experienced ambulance crew, clinical rotations, or time spent in a hospital setting.

Online courses are usually less expensive than in-person training and are often the preferred method for experienced EMTs who need to recertify. However, online programs are sometimes considered to be less effective, which may impact a student’s ability to get a job in the future.

Other Options for EMT Training

Many EMT training programs offer a hybrid approach, allowing students to combine online learning with in-person training. This often offers the best of both approaches.

Students usually do the reading, lectures, and homework online, and in-person hours are reserved for practicing what was learned online. Students need to be disciplined when using a hybrid approach if they want to make sure they finish the requirements by the designated deadlines.

For those who want to start working as an EMT quickly, the accelerated training format is another option. Often requiring attendance three to five days per week for six to ten weeks (depending on the program), accelerated classes are very challenging and not suitable for all students. Students might not have enough time to adequately absorb the material and can struggle to pass the state and NREMT exams, wasting the time and money they invested in the accelerated course.

Considerations for All Learning Formats

Regardless of the format you choose, check that the EMT course you’re interested in is approved by the Washington State Department of Health by visiting its website. The program also needs to meet the requirements for National Registry EMT (NREMT) certification because EMTs in Washington State are licensed by both the state and the national agency.

When deciding between an online or in-person format, consider your lifestyle and how much time you can devote to taking a course. Being an EMT carries a lot of responsibility, and correctly recalling and applying information in emergency situations is critical to helping people who are seriously ill or injured.

Be sure to also consider your learning style. If you learn best by doing and collaborating with others, in-person or hybrid is probably the way to go.
