Taking practice tests is a key part of preparing for the NREMT exam, but going through an NREMT test prep course can be quite intimidating, especially if you’re getting lower scores or feel overwhelmed.

There are several ways to be more consistent with your NREMT practice tests, like studying strategically, taking your time, and repeating areas of weakness. In this article, we’ll break down these tips to help you get on a smoother journey towards acing your NREMT exam!

How to Improve NREMT Practice Test Consistency

Practice tests assess how much you know about EMS. Naturally, there will be things you’ll miss out on–especially during your first couple of tries. So, if you get a low score, don’t be discouraged! You just need to review the areas you scored poorly in.

Here’s a quick guide on how to improve your NREMT practice test consistency:

Study the Five Content Areas

It helps to remember that practice tests are assessment tools–they’re meant to test what you already know, not to teach you new material. So, before you take these tests, make sure you have a solid grasp of the five key content areas:

  • Airway, respiration, and ventilation
  • Cardiology and resuscitation
  • Trauma
  • Medical, obstetrics, and gynecology
  • Emergency medical services operations

It’s important to study these subjects thoroughly, which means taking the time to review the material and study in a way that’s most effective for your learning style.

Follow a Study Plan

Following a study plan is a great solution for anyone who has difficulty staying on track for the NREMT or those who need NREMT time management for their busy schedules. A study plan can help you stay accountable because it allows you to develop a routine you can track your progress with. An effective study plan might look like this:

  1. Study the exam content.
  2. Take practice tests.
  3. Repeat the process.

Repeat those three steps until you’re confident in your knowledge and receive passing scores on your practice tests.

Simulate Test Day

When you take a practice test, try to simulate the experience of actually taking the NREMT exam. This means mimicking the environment and giving yourself a time limit. This can help you prepare physically, mentally, and emotionally for the big day.

Take Your Time

Many students rush through their tests thinking that they won’t be able to finish them in time, but in reality, you’ll have plenty of time to answer questions calmly and logically. Take your time and don’t stress!

Practice Repetition

Repetition is key for practice test consistency. Once you uncover a topic or concept that leaves you stumped, you should keep repeating that topic until you understand it better. You will know you understand it when you answer different questions about this concept correctly.
