How to Pass the Advanced EMT Test

The advanced emergency medical technician (AEMT) exam can be difficult. Some aspiring AEMTs even have to take the test multiple times before passing! But with proper study habits (including a solid AEMT online course), a strong understanding of emergency medical services (EMS) concepts, and ample training and practice, acing the exam on the first try is possible!

What Is an Advanced EMT?

An advanced EMT (emergency medical technician) is trained to provide onsite medical care and transportation for injured or ill individuals in emergencies. They perform advanced and critical medical care out of an ambulance using the tools within it.

They aim to stabilize patients and safely bring them to a medical facility for further treatment. They’re also trained to administer some fluids and medications as needed, which differentiates them from EMTs. Regarding a paramedic versus AEMT, however, the main distinction is that the latter can perform a broader range of advanced medical interventions; they can even assist higher-level medical professionals (i.e., doctors) up to the emergency room.

Being an AEMT is a promising career. It’s as fulfilling as it is exciting, not to mention that it can sustain a living. The average advanced emergency medical technician salary ranges from $38,000 to upwards of $50,000 a year in the United States.

Becoming an Advanced EMT

To get certified as an advanced EMT, you must pass the AEMT certification exam by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT). To be eligible to take the test, you must first complete a state-approved or nationally accredited-AEMT training program.

These courses typically take several months to complete and will cover advanced topics in EMS. Apart from the program, you must also receive hands-on training on AEMT-related procedures and complete clinical rotations and field internships to gain practical experience.

The Advanced EMT Test

Once you’ve completed your AEMT education and training, you’ll be eligible to take the NREMT exam. The AEMT test consists of two components: the cognitive and the psychomotor. Let’s break these two down.

Cognitive Component

The cognitive component of the AEMT exam consists of 135 multiple-choice questions designed to test your knowledge and understanding of the following content areas:

  • Airway, Respiration, and Ventilation
  • Cardiology and Resuscitation
  • Trauma
  • Medical, Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • EMS Operations

The exam is timed (two hours and fifteen minutes), and it’s linear, meaning that the test will go through all 135 questions and then decide whether you passed or failed.

Psychomotor Component

The psychomotor component of the AEMT exam assesses your practical skills. It’s conducted in person at an approved testing center and takes about two to three hours to complete.

The psychomotor component consists of five skill stations, each focusing on a specific area of EMS:

  • Patient assessment and management
  • Cardiac arrest management
  • Airway management
  • Intravenous therapy
  • Medication administration

Starting July 1st, 2024 NREMT will discontinue the AEMT psychomotor examination and the candidate will only have to take one written exam to become AEMT certified.
