How to Answer NREMT Questions

Emergency medical responders (EMRs), emergency medical technicians (EMTs), advanced emergency medical technicians (AEMTs), and paramedics must pass the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam to gain certification. This test is difficult, with only 70% of paramedics passing on their first try in 2020.

To increase your chances of passing the exam, you need to study the material and understand the test’s format. This will give you a leg up and hopefully help you pass the written NREMT exam

Read the Entire Question

As part of your NREMT exam prep, we recommend taking a few practice exams. On these exams, you’ll notice that the questions are tricky, with sometimes a single word making all the difference in your answer. Read each question and answer very carefully before making your selection.

Only Use What’s Presented to You

You can’t take the NREMT without a class, and during this class, you’ll learn about the most common scenarios you’ll run into while at work. These scenarios will be reflected in your exam questions.

Avoid making any assumptions about the situations you’re presented with. Don’t overthink the question–simply use the information you’re given to make an informed answer.

Don’t Ignore Information in the Question

Each question provides you with all of the information you need in order to make an informed answer. Don’t ignore any information that is there. You may very well be skipping over something that’s integral to getting the correct answer.

Choose the Best Answer

Like on many tests, the NREMT exam includes multiple answers that sound like they could be correct. In fact, this may actually be the case–more than one answer could be right.

Read the Last Line First

To pass the NREMT exam on the first try, you may need to change how you read test questions. Start by reading the last line of the question first, then the answers, then the rest of the question. This will ensure that you understand exactly what’s being asked of you.

When you come across a difficult question, it’s easy to panic instead of jumping into problem-solving mode. If you’re able to relax during the test, you’ll have a much easier time with answering your questions. Here’s a trick for when anxiety is becoming overbearing:

  • Stop what you’re doing
  • Take a deep breath
  • Observe your surroundings
  • Plan on what you will do next

The NREMT test may be tough, but it’s certainly not impossible to pass on your first try. With the right approach to answering questions, you’ll come to the exam more prepared than most other people.

Next Steps

To help you better understand the test and its material, The Paramedic Coach has created the Video Vault. This tool features information on your course material, each of the five sections on National Registry tests, and how to prepare for your course.

For a one-time payment, you’ll get lifetime access to the Video Vault, which includes information on every EMS level. This means you won’t need to buy it again when you transition from EMT to paramedic!
