All emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in Georgia need to renew their licenses every two years. The process is simple: online EMT certification in Georgia lets you recertify without having to work through tedious paperwork or going to a physical office.
You can simply log into the Georgia Department of Public Health’s (DPH) emergency medical services (EMS) License Management System (LMS) and submit an application for $75 (with an additional $75 penalty for late renewals).
Before Online EMT Recertification in Georgia
You can only recertify as an EMT in Georgia once you’ve completed the state’s required continuing education units (CEUs). As for how many CEUs are needed for EMT recertification in Georgia, the golden number is forty hours, which is broken down into:
- Eight hours of pediatric topics
- Four hours of cardiovascular topics (STEMI and stroke)
- Four hours of trauma topics
- Twenty-four hours of general EMS topics (except CPR and ACLS topics)
If you’re wondering where to get EMT continuing education in Georgia, note that you can only take courses approved by the state (through the Georgia Office of EMS and Trauma or OEMS) or the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE). You can contact one of the regional EMS program directors from your county to find out which EMT classes are offered near you.
You have to save your CEUs in LMS. This will be used to verify the requirement and doubles as documentation in the event of an audit. If you’re taking a state-approved program, your CE hours may be automatically added into your LMS after your instructor adds you to the course roster.
That said, it’s still good to double-check with your provider. If you’re taking a CAPCE-accredited course that’s not necessarily recognized by Georgia OEMS, then you’ll have to input your credits manually by:
- Logging in to your LMS account
- Clicking on ‘Education,’ then ‘My Report’
- Clicking the green plus button to the right of the topic of your training
- Entering the necessary details, specifically the ‘Course Name’ and ‘Completed Date’
- Uploading a scanned copy of your course certificate
You can add more than one topic at a time. Just click on ‘Add Topic’ and supply the needed information.
How to Recertify as a Georgia EMT Online
Recertifying as a Georgia EMT is easy because you can do it online through your LMS. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do this:
Access the Application
Log in to your LMS account, then click on ‘Applications.’ Under ‘Personal Applications,’ click on ‘View All Personal Applications,’ then click ‘Apply Now.’
Complete the Requirements
Fill out the required forms, which include:
- Form 1: Training Hours Verification
- Form 2: Compliance check
- Form 3: Workforce Study Survey
- Form 4: Renewal Information
You also need to upload a copy of your CPR card, front and back.
Make a Payment
Pay for the application. The bi-annual renewal fee is $75. Late renewals require a late penalty of an additional $75.00, and all license requirements must have been met prior to the renewal date. Although late renewals are allowed, your current license will be considered lapsed and will remain so (i.e., you’re not allowed to work as an EMT) until it has been renewed.
Submit the Application
Submit your application. If it’s approved, you will see it marked as ‘Completed’ and receive an email confirming your recertification. Your LMS account will also display your new expiration date and give you access to your updated license card.
