Becoming an emergency medical technician (EMT) in California involves training and certification–both of which incur some costs. Training for an EMT exam in California, which is a requirement in the state, ranges from around $1,000 to $2,000. Then, certification costs around $120 to $250, depending on the specific area you’re in.

How Much Does It Cost to Become a California EMT?

How old do you have to be to be an EMT in California? In the Golden State, the minimum age requirement to become an EMT is eighteen. You must also hold a high school diploma or a similar qualification and have a valid driver’s license. California also requires all aspiring EMTs to take an approved training program from a recognized provider, which will require some investment.

The cost of becoming a California EMT differs based on the program you take and other fees you might have to pay to take your course. That said, it’ll generally set you back between $1,200 to $3,000 for an entire course.

Accelerated and fast-track programs are also available at the higher end of that price range. Some programs advertise themselves as being only $500 or less but be wary, as this price may only include tuition and not other expenses like books, insurance, registration fees, etc.

How to Save on Training Fees

Here are some tips that could help you possibly save on the costs of training:

Do Your Research

California has multiple training providers, each with its own program, requirements, and fees. Do some research to find the course that fits your learning style and your budget.

Enroll in a Free Program

Some healthcare companies and medical organizations offer eligible candidates free or subsidized training programs. For example, in 2022, NorCal Ambulance launched an all-expenses paid EMT recruitment program to bolster staffing levels to support emergency medical services (EMS) provided in local communities. You can also find some technical schools that offer Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) grants. Try to keep an eye out for these types of courses by staying connected with the relevant networks and channels.

Find a Sponsor

In some cases, private companies offer EMT training sponsorships in exchange for full-time service in their organization after your certification. This is an ideal option for candidates who can’t afford to pay for the training programs and would be open to working in the sponsoring company after their education.

The Price of EMT Certification in California

The price of EMT certification in California is $75 for the first time, according to the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA). However, each county applies a fee for processing on top of that, so the cost of licensing differs depending on where you are. Here’s the price of EMT certification in the top California cities:

  • Los Angeles: $190
  • San Diego: $258
  • San Jose: $150
  • San Francisco: $200
  • Fresno: $127
  • Sacramento: $125.28
  • Long Beach: $190
  • Oakland: $140
  • Bakersfield: $176.60
  • Anaheim: $125

How long does California EMT certification last? It’s valid for two years. After that, you need to renew your certification, which may require proof of continuing education and additional payments (e.g. recertification fees).
