How Much Does EMT Training Cost in Florida?

Parked emergency vehicles How Much Does EMT Training Cost in Florida

Florida emergency medical technician (EMT) training can vary in cost depending on the program you select, whether you’re a Florida resident or non-resident, and how many times it takes you to pass the certification course and National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam.

To become an EMT, you must meet the Florida EMT licensing requirements. These requirements include completing and passing a state-approved EMT course and passing the NREMT cognitive (knowledge) test.

In this post, we’ll explain how much EMT school can cost in Florida, the factors that impact the cost, and how you may be able to lower the overall cost of earning your EMT license.

A Breakdown of Costs

In Florida, an accredited EMT training program can cost anywhere between $500 to $8,000 in tuition, but these aren’t the only fees you need to keep in mind when building your budget for your EMT training. Other program costs include:

  • Program application fee: $25 to $50
  • EMT course lab and clinical fees: $150 to $200
  • Textbooks: $150 to $300

Some courses will include a pass to the NREMT exam with the cost of the course. When selecting an EMT training program, make sure that the course is approved by the Florida Health Department.

Factors That Increase Price

Because EMT training programs vary so much in price, it makes sense to do your research to get the most out of your program without overspending. Here are a few factors that can impact the price of your training program:

Public Versus Private Institutions

Many state-approved EMT training programs in Florida are conducted by colleges and universities. Public colleges can usually offer lower tuition rates because they receive public funding to subsidize the cost. Private universities do not receive public funding, which is why their tuition rates are usually higher.

Resident Status

Whether you choose a publicly or privately funded EMT training course, many courses will offer different tuition rates depending on your Florida residency status. If you meet the residency requirements for Florida residents, you may be able to receive a lower tuition rate than someone who is a non-resident.

Passing the Course

Not everyone who takes an EMT training course passes on the first try. Many students find that learning this much-complicated material can be challenging to complete in one semester. If you’re working another job, helping take care of your family, or are struggling to find a study group, you might have a harder time passing the course.

This is where the right study tools can come in handy. With The Paramedic Coach’s Video Vault, you’ll have lifetime access to more than 480 videos and 2,000 NREMT practice test questions, as well as drug cards, knowledge checks, and exclusive access to our private student group for only $147.

Passing the NREMT

NREMT exam fees usually come out to around $80 if they aren’t included in your course fees. If you do not pass the exam, you will need to retake it before your course completion certificate expires. If you fail the NREMT multiple times, you may need to retake the entire EMT course.

Students who use our Video Vault resources do better on their exams and feel more confident in passing their EMT courses. Instead of paying thousands to pass your course and exams, invest in our Video Vault to get it right the first time.

License Renewal

In Florida, you need to renew your EMT license every two years. Emergency medical service (EMS) personnel must provide proof of continued education to prove they are up-to-date on the latest regulations and care practices to maintain their licensure.

Some opt for IV certification programs in Florida for EMTs to continue their EMT education. There are many ways to prove continued education, but you must maintain an active EMT status to get the lowest renewal rate.

The cost to renew an EMT license in Florida depends on whether it is renewed before or after it expires. For more information on navigating a career in EMS, check out our other posts and resources today!
