How Much Does EMT School Cost In Florida?

Emergency worker and vehicle How Much Does EMT School Cost In Florida

Emergency medical technician (EMT) training programs can range between $500 to $8,000 in Florida, depending on the program. Online EMT courses in Florida can sometimes be more affordable because the lessons can be self-paced, and most only require an active instructor for the in-person labs and hands-on practice.

How much EMT training costs in Florida also depends on if you sign up for a program offered by a public or private institution. Private institutions tend to be more expensive, whereas public institutions receive public funding to help keep the costs down.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss the average cost of EMT programs, how to get the most bang for your buck, and how much you can expect to pay to earn your EMT certification and license.

Average Cost for EMT Programs

The average cost for an EMT program in Florida is $2,500, but the cost can be either much higher or much lower. There are two main factors that impact how much an EMT program costs in Florida: whether you choose a program at a private or public institution, and whether or not you’re a current Florida resident.

We know public institutions have lower prices than private ones. Still, if you apply for scholarships or are offered financial support from a private institution, it may be the more affordable option. Always explore financial aid options and scholarships that can help bring down costs.

Additionally, many programs that are part of a college or university will offer different tuition rates depending on whether you’re a Florida resident or an out-of-state student. For example, the tuition for Florida residents at Santa Fe College is $2,881, and for non-residents, it’s closer to $6,000.

Is the Cost Too Good to Be True?

Suppose you find a program that is startlingly low-cost and feels too good to be true⎼it just might be. Before you sign up for any EMT training program, make sure that the Florida Health Department approves it.

To be a licensed EMT, you need proof that you have completed an accredited EMT program. Accreditation shows that the program you completed is up to the Florida Health Department’s standards and that you are ready for the next steps in your certification. If the program you complete is not accredited, the Florida Health Department will deny your licensure application until you complete an accredited program⎼even if you pass the NREMT exam!

This means that you will pay for the unaccredited program that didn’t count towards your licensure, and you’ll have to pay for a second program to get the right certificate. Save yourself time and money by enrolling in an accredited program.

Total Expected Costs for EMT Certification

The EMT training program isn’t the only cost you should budget for when earning your EMT certification. Here are a few other estimated costs you need to keep in mind:

  • EMT training program application fee: $25 to $50
  • EMT training program tuition: $500 to $8,000
  • EMT training program books and study guides: $300 to $450
  • Course lab and clinical fees: $100 to $300
  • Exam fees for the NREMT (if not included in the cost of the course): $80
  • Florida EMT certification application fee: $35
  • Background check and drug screening: Varies, but likely around $200

Look for accredited programs in your budget and see what scholarships you qualify for. You should focus on finding a program that won’t charge you an arm and a leg but will still give you high-quality training and expertise.

Study Materials That Pay You Back

Only about 70% of hopeful EMTs pass the NREMT on the first try. If you fail the test over and over, you may be required to retake a certification course. The costs of retaking the test and the course adds up, and no one wants to overspend when investing in their career.

This is why we’re offering unlimited lifetime access to The Paramedic Coach’s Video Vault for only $147. This resource includes more than 480 videos and 2,000 NREMT practice questions, as well as knowledge checks, worksheets, drug cards, and more. The Video Vault also includes access to our private student group, so you can increase your chances of passing the NREMT and your certification course on the first try.
