How Many Times Can You Take the NREMT?

Candidates are allowed up to six total attempts at the NREMT exam. After three failed tries, you must complete an approved remedial training program before testing again, and after six failed attempts, you’ll need to complete a full state-approved education program. This policy is designed to ensure that anyone certified has met the knowledge and competency standards required of emergency medical providers.

‘NREMT’ stands for the ‘National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians,’ an organization that certifies prehospital medical providers in the United States. The NREMT exam is a crucial step in achieving certification as an EMT, AEMT, or paramedic, and it’s designed to test the essential skills needed for providing prehospital care.

While many candidates pass on their first attempt, it’s common for some to wonder how many times they can retake the exam if needed. The NREMT allows candidates to take the exam up to six times, with a fifteen-day waiting period between each attempt. If all six attempts are unsuccessful, the candidate must complete a remedial training program before attempting again.

One common concern for test-takers is how long it takes to get NREMT results, as these results are vital for advancing in their career. Typically, results are available within forty-eight hours after the exam, giving candidates a clear understanding of where they stand.

In addition to understanding the retake policy, candidates should be familiar with NREMT exam scoring, which utilizes a computer-adaptive testing system that adjusts question difficulty based on performance. By understanding the scoring system and retake rules, candidates can better prepare for the exam and improve their chances of success.

What Is the NREMT Retake Policy?

The NREMT recognizes that not everyone will pass the exam on their first try. This is why they established a retake policy to allow candidates to try again.

Typically, there is a fifteen-day waiting period between retakes. During this time, you can revisit the syllabus and how you approached the previous NREMT exam to:

  • Identify your weak areas
  • Improve your knowledge and skill levels

Fortunately, NREMT provides more detailed information about how you performed on a test right after you receive your results. They can help a great deal for the second round of NREMT exam prep because you can easily figure out areas that need improvement.

Those who retake the NREMT exam may also come across masked items in future exams. In other words, there’s no point in memorizing the test you already took and did not pass because the next exam will have surprise questions (items you probably cannot guess or memorize).

Rather than trying to cut corners, it’s best to thoroughly restudy and practice your weak areas to minimize the chances of failing in your next attempt.

What Is the Lowest Passing Score for the NREMT?

The NREMT requires that you score at least at 950 to pass the NREMT exam. That said, the passing standard for the NREMT exam is determined using a computer-adaptive approach. This means that the difficulty of the questions adjusts based on your performance.

It’s a reflection of the level of competency required to meet the standards of a qualified emergency medical technician (EMT) or paramedic. The actual passing score may vary depending on the:

  • Difficulty of questions
  • Number of questions

There are also a different number of questions and test durations for the various types of NREMT exams. Here’s a brief overview:

  • NREMT EMR Exam: One hour and forty-five minutes long with ninety to 110 questions
  • NREMT EMT Exam: Two hours long with seventy to 120 questions
  • NREMT AEMT Exam: Two hours and fifteen minutes long with 135 questions
  • NREMT Paramedic Exam: Two hours and thirty minutes long with eighty to 150 questions

Note that the NREMT can make changes to their policies and exams at any time, so you should check the official website for details about your specific test before taking it. Generally, the fewer questions, the greater the difficulty level per question.

What to Do if You Fail the NREMT

As mentioned earlier, the NREMT allows you to retake an exam fifteen days after your initial attempt. During these fifteen days, you need to evaluate your performance on the first test.

If you feel you tried your best but still couldn’t pass, it’s best to get help by reaching out to a specialized NREMT coach. They can help you identify areas you need to work on and link you to better academic resources.

If you fail after three consecutive exams, you will be required to submit an official document that proves you’ve completed a remedial training program. After this, you can attempt the exam three more times. If you fail those three as well, you will have to complete an entire state-approved educational program.

Remedial requirements by exam type may include:

  • EMR: Full education program
  • EMT: Twenty-four-hour remedial program or completion of the national component of the NCCP model
  • AEMT: Thirty-six-hour remedial program or completion of the national component of the NCCP model
  • Paramedic: Forty-eight-hour remedial program or completion of the national component of the NCCP model
