In Georgia, a total of forty hours of continuing education units (CEUs) are needed for emergency medical technician (EMT) recertification. The National Registry is not required to renew your license in the state.
However, you must obtain state-approved emergency medical services (EMS) CE credits to maintain an active license. Whether you’re a seasoned EMT or a newbie renewing your certification for the first time, it helps to have a Georgia EMT test prep resource like our Video Vault to supplement your continuing education. This can help you brush up on your foundations and stay on top of the latest trends and developments in the field!
EMT Recertification in Georgia
EMTs have to recertify every two years. This ensures that you’re still competent and able to perform your duties in emergency medical services (EMS) and can effectively provide the best care for patients during emergencies. Here’s a quick guide on how to recertify as an EMT in Georgia:
EMT Continuing Education in Georgia
The minimum required continuing education hours for EMT license renewal in Georgia is forty hours. This consists of:
- Eight hours of pediatric topics
- Four hours of cardiovascular topics (STEMI and stroke)
- Four hours of trauma topics
- Twenty-four hours of general EMS topics (except CPR and ACLS topics)
There are only two types of CE courses acceptable for license renewal in Georgia: those approved by the state and those approved by CAPCE.
Georgia EMS License System
All licensed personnel are responsible for tracking their continuing education for each renewal cycle into the Georgia Department of Public Health’s (DPH) EMS License Management System (LMS).
This system lets you save your CEUs, which not just backs your recertification but demonstrates your continued competency in case of an audit. If you’re unable to provide documentation of your CE transcripts when requested, your EMS license may be suspended or revoked.
If you’re taking CEUs approved by the Georgia Office of EMS and Trauma, your instructor will be able to add your name to the course’s roster. This will automatically add your CE hours, including state-approved conferences, to your profile when you complete your course. Otherwise, you’ll likely have to submit your CE hours manually.
To do this, you must:
- Log in to your LMS account.
- Click on ‘Education,’ then ‘My Report.’
- Click the green plus button to the right of the topic of your training.
- Enter the necessary details, specifically the ‘Course Name’ and ‘Completed Date.’
- Upload a scanned copy of your course certificate.
- If you’re adding more topics, click ‘Add Topic’ and fill in the required information.
