How Long Is the NREMT Exam?

In order to become a part of the emergency medical services (EMS) community, you’ll need to pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam. As part of your NREMT test prep, you may be wondering how much time you should expect to spend on the test.

Today, we’ll talk about the duration of the NREMT exam and how many NREMT questions you can expect. With this information in mind, you’ll be better equipped to pass the exam.

What to Expect From the NREMT Exam

Whenever you’re taking an exam, it’s a good idea to go in with a set of expectations. The NREMT exam is divided into different sections–this test is taken on a computer with questions written by the EMS community. The questions get progressively harder as the test goes on, so be prepared.

After you take the test, you may be wondering how long it takes to get NREMT results. Typically, it takes two business days. This means you will not see results on the weekends; the only days that count towards the waiting period are Monday through Friday.

What Is Covered on the Exam?

The NREMT exam covers situations you’ll likely run into in your line of work, such as:

  • Trauma (serious physical injuries)
  • Ventilation (the movement of air)
  • Airway management
  • Respiration (breathing in air and breathing out carbon dioxide)
  • Cardiology (the heart)
  • OB/GYN (women’s health, labor, and delivery)
  • Medical emergencies (diabetic emergencies, anaphylaxis)
  • Resuscitation (bringing someone back from unconsciousness or apparent death)

This test is designed to make sure you have a basic understanding of the medical issues you’re likely to handle. You’ll learn more about these items in your NREMT class.

So, How Long Is the Test?

You are given two hours to complete the cognitive portion of the NREMT exam, but you likely won’t need that much time. Most people finish sooner than that, so don’t go into the test feeling like you will be rushed.

You’ll have seventy to 120 questions to complete, ten of which don’t count. These ten questions are questions the NREMT test writers are testing out to see if they’re appropriate to put on future tests.

How Can I Prepare for the Test?

Everyone who gets NREMT-certified must take a class in addition to the test. Some people say that the class is tough as it speeds through the material, not giving you much of a chance to learn.

To help you ace both the class and test, The Paramedic Coach has created an online study tool called ‘The Video Vault.’ This tool prepares you for class, reviews important material, and covers all five portions of the National Registry exams.

The Video Vault has information on every certification level and includes lifetime access, so you won’t need to buy it every time you move on in your career. Get this essential tool today with a one-time payment!
