How Long Does New York State EMT Certification Last?

To become an emergency medical technician (EMT) in the state of New York, you must pass a state-sponsored test to work in the field. This is similar to the nationwide standard, with some changes based on localized protocols.

After you take the EMT test preparation and pass the New York State (NYS) exam, you can obtain NYS EMT certification that will be valid for thirty-six months from the last day of the month that you passed your test.

Preparing for New York State EMT Certification

To work as an EMT in New York, you must complete an operationally approved course or program of study and pass the NYS EMT exam. The state requires that EMT students must be at least seventeen years old by the last day of the month of their scheduled exam.

How much does EMT training cost in New York? Generally, courses can go between $500 to $1,500. These programs are generally accelerated, so jumping right into them might be a little intimidating.

It’s good to start with digestible courses that can give you a better understanding of basic concepts. Resources from The Paramedic Coach break down EMT training so that you have a solid foundation of emergency medical services (EMS), including tools and protocols.

The New York State EMT Certification Exam

Once you complete an authorized course, you’ll automatically receive an exam confirmation email from ‘PSI/AMP’ customer service. This will contain instructions on how to schedule your test on the date, time, and location you prefer.

Prospective EMTs must complete both a written exam and a practical skills exam (PSE). You’ll be evaluated on trauma and medical assessment, bag valve mask, and cardiac management, among other relevant skills such as spinal immobilization, airway management, and bleeding control. There will be six stations and if you fail three or more, you must take a refresher course before retesting.

All NYS exams are delivered by computer at computer-based testing centers located throughout the state, with the option of Live Remote Proctoring available for EMT and community first responder (CFR) students. You only have two attempts to pass the test before you’re required to take a refresher course.

Reciprocity

Reciprocity is the process in which an EMT certified by one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the military, and/or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) may be granted NYS EMT certification without taking an initial or refresher NYS course.

To qualify for reciprocity, an out-of-state licensed EMT must have completed a training program based on the national guidelines. They must also have taken relevant written and practical EMT exams in the last eighteen months (except for US military members whose eligibility extends to the last three years), either under their home or practicing state or the NREMT.

There is a separate application for reciprocity applicants. The New York licensing agency may also require verification from the other state through forms. Out-of-state EMTs should note that regulations and policies are subject to change.

Renewal

NYS EMT certification is typically valid for three years. How do you renew your EMT license in New York? You can renew your certification by taking another exam or through a continuing education recertification program. Those applicable for the latter option must be an EMT who is in continuous practice and demonstrates competency; this pathway allows you to renew your license without taking another test.
