Getting an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license is quite different in New York as it requires you to take a localized state-sponsored exam, instead of the standard National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) test. After getting test prep for EMT and successfully passing the exam, you’ll receive an EMT license valid for three years.
To renew an EMT license in New York after it expires, you can undergo the state’s Continuing Education Recertification Program, allowing you to get recertified without passing another test. Alternatively, you may take another New York State (NYS) EMT exam.
EMT Licenses in New York
To get certified as an EMT in New York, you must complete an operationally approved EMT course or program and pass the NYS EMT exam. The New York EMT exam is similar to the national standard test (NREMT test) except it comes with some localized sections.
The NYS EMT test consists of two parts: a written exam and a practical test. Both assess a student’s knowledge of emergency medical response (EMS) protocols and practices, evaluating their preparedness to work in the field.
Reciprocity for Out-of-State EMTs
Although New York has its own EMT certification exam, out-of-state EMTs don’t necessarily have to take it to be able to practice in the state. Reciprocity allows an EMT holding a current certification from one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the military, and/or from the NREMT to be granted NYS certification without having to take an NYS original course.
An out-of-state EMT is eligible for reciprocity if they:
- Demonstrate a need for certification by providing proof of education, employment, or another acceptable need as determined by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Systems (BEMS);
- Have completed a course that meets or exceeds a curriculum based on the current National EMS educational standards and approved by the BEMS; or
- Have completed an out-of-state recognized, or National Registry recertification program that is an equivalent program or process to NYS or complete a practical skills evaluation and/or written exam as determined by the BEMS
New York State EMT License Validity
How long does New York State EMT certification last? An EMT license in New York is valid for thirty-six months, or three years. If you’d like to continue practicing as an EMT after it expires, you must renew your license or get recertified.
How to Renew an EMT License in New York
There are two ways to renew an EMT license in New York. The first is through a continuing education recertification program, which is designed to help refresh previously learned material and learn about updated protocols and policies.
How much is the EMT refresher course in New York? The cost ranges between $500 to $1,500 depending on the program and provider. It’s available to EMTs who:
- Are in continuous practice
- Have demonstrated competence in applicable behavioral and performance objectives
- Demonstrated completion of appropriate continuing education
Those who are eligible and complete the program may renew their certification without having to complete a written exam. Alternatively, EMTs may opt to not undergo continuing education and, instead, take another certification exam to renew their license.
