Feeling Overwhelmed By the NREMT Exam

The best way of overcoming NREMT exam anxiety and ensuring you feel ready, confident, and capable is to follow a properly structured, thorough study prep course–without overwhelming yourself by trying to cram in too much all at once!

Students so often focus on quantity over quality and become stressed and exhausted, which is unsurprising if you’re trying to learn a complex, technical, and wide-scope syllabus under pressure. Taking a step back, giving yourself plenty of study time, and completing your program right to the end is a great way to get your nerves under control.

Today, we’ll recap what to expect from our Video Vault NREMT test prep course and clarify our advice if you’re approaching your first exam or next retake it and want the best chance of success.

Common Reasons for NREMT Test Anxiety

Passing the NREMT is a big deal, and some nerves are to be expected, especially if you’re pinning your hopes on a first-time, flying-colors pass or need to pass this retake to avoid remedial training. On that note, it’s well worth understanding what happens if you don’t pass, because panicking about the worst-case scenario won’t make it easier to stay calm and focused:

  • Candidates taking the EMR exam have three attempts at the NREMT, beyond which you’ll need to attend a brand-new educational training program. This means that if you’re on attempt number three, it’s incredibly important that you approach your study prep right.
  • Applicants taking other NREMT tests from EMT onwards have a maximum of six tries. However, after three fails, you’ll have to show that you’ve completed a remedial training program before you can apply for another go.

Of course, in an ideal world, every student would pass straight away, but because we know that up to around 30% of candidates fail at least once, there’s a good chance that you’ll feel more anxious when there’s a lot riding on your next attempt. Proper preparation is key, which means you know the content areas, you’ve identified your weaknesses, and you’ve spent sufficient time reinforcing your comprehension and recall before you reach the exam.

How to Boost Your Confidence Ahead of the NREMT Test

As we’ve mentioned, the key to passing the NREMT isn’t about hours of studying, repeating hundreds of practice questions, or reading the same study texts over and over. Instead, it’s all about a well-planned approach and using the invaluable resources within our Video Vault to give yourself the tools you need to answer every question clearly and competently.

Recapping the content areas is a good first step because you already know the content that will be on the test and the proportion of your test score that relies on your knowledge of each area–with exact breakdowns of the percentage of the exam focused on cardiology and how much will be on resuscitation, for example. Likewise, we already know how the questions will be split between adult and pediatric scenarios, so you can use this information to your advantage.

This doesn’t mean that you can find a cheat code to study some content and ignore the rest, but it does mean you’re not spending all of your study time on one area that will only be a small part of your test score.
