How you study for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam significantly impacts your chances for success. It’s best to understand your study style and to stick to methods that allow you to comprehend and digest your study materials most effectively.

Some helpful study tips for exam success include understanding the core content pillars, following a study plan, and utilizing tools such as an Arizona EMT online test prep. Let’s dive in further to some of the best ways to study for the Arizona EMT exam!

Find a Study Method that Works For You

Everyone learns differently. Some people do better in classroom settings, while others are more efficient in freestyle mode. Understanding where you fall in that spectrum can help you lock into a study method that’s most conducive to how you digest and retain information.

When you’re studying, remember to include assessments; flashcards, quizzes, and practice tests can help you check your comprehension of EMT concepts and allow you to train yourself for the NREMT exam.

Know What to Study

You should know what topics to focus on for the Arizona EMT test so that you don’t waste your time and overload your brain with information that you don’t need. The NREMT exam focuses on five content domains:

  • Scene Size-up and Safety
  • Primary Assessment
  • Secondary Assessment
  • Patient Treatment and Transport
  • Operations

The majority of your studying should focus on these topics, with some supplementary material that can enhance your knowledge of each. Take into account that the test is 85% adults and 15% pediatrics, so you should also balance out that coverage in your studies.

Follow the 1-2-3-4 Method

The 1-2-3-4 method is a simple and foolproof way to ensure that you understand the ins and outs of the NREMT content that you’re studying. It breaks down concepts into four questions:

  1. What is it?
  2. What are the risk factors?
  3. What are the hallmark signs and symptoms?
  4. How do we treat it?

You must be able to explain things clearly and precisely. Then, you have to anticipate the risk factors and know the hallmark signs and symptoms. These are key to tying everything together and getting you to the most important step of being an EMT: treatment.

Stick to a Study Plan

Many people recommend diversifying your study sources. While this is valuable in expanding your knowledge base, it might not help you focus on your studies. It’s ideal to stick to a singular study plan that maps out your progression from learning to mastery to practice.

Find a study program like The Paramedic Coach’s Video Vault, then follow it to a T. This will help you avoid feeling scatterbrained; instead, you’ll get to hyperfocus on a method that works. Complete your chosen study plan and go over it at least twice to fully familiarize yourself with what you’re studying.

Maximize Your Time

Many aspiring EMTs are juggling their training with other things, whether that’s personal life or a different career. This leaves you with less time to really sit down and study, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t learn as you go.

Maximize your free time and absorb concepts whenever you can. For example, if you go on a long drive every day, listen to recordings of your classes while on the road. If you take public transportation, watch videos from an online NREMT test prep program while on the bus or train.

Use Alpha Waves

Alpha waves are sound waves designed to help you focus on the task at hand. You can find alpha wave videos on YouTube and play them in the background while you’re studying. This helps you drown out other noise and keeps you from being constantly distracted.
